I am a career freelance writer who has authored and coauthored numerous books and have also written hundreds of magazine, newspaper and Internet articles in my career. My published subjects are diverse, ranging from books on adoption to books on numerous medical topics, such as fibromyalgia, kidney disease, alcoholism, diabetes, phobias, amphetamine drugs, and pneumonia. I have also written articles on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
and other topics. In addition, I have written books for physicians
on headaches, arthritis, back pain and other subjects. The common
denominator is that whether I’m writing a self-help book or a reference
book or am writing a book with a doctor, I’m constantly thinking
about future readers and what they are most likely to need. My goal is
to provide readers with important information to help them solve their
problems, often issues that can be very distressing to them.
My newest books are The Grandfamily Guidebook, When Your Adult Child Breaks Your Heart with Joel Young, MD, and The Encyclopedia of Kidney Diseases and Disorders, written with I. David Weiner, M.D. My most popular book is Fibromyalgia for Dummies, coauthored with Roland Staud, M.D. We have sold more than 100,000 copies in two editions, which is excellent for authors who are not household names!
I am a member of the American Society of Journalists & Authors. I use intensive searches of PubMed and Google Scholar
to help me find the latest research on my topics and also rely upon
contacts with experts in the field and a careful reading of the key
medical journals to which I subscribe. In addition, I query people who
have the problem about which I am writing, so I can gain an insider
feeling to the problem.
